🇮🇪 Russian-language records from Russia and the former USSR

Certified Russian to English Translation in Ireland

Irish bodies such as ISD (Immigration Service Delivery) expect any document that is not in English or Irish to come with a certified translation: the complete text in English, signed and dated by the translator, who adds their name, occupation, address and phone number. That is what our Russian to English translation in Ireland delivers, for certificates issued in Russia and for Russian-language records from other former Soviet states.

Most Russian files we receive start with a birth certificate, often needed quickly. One recent order paired an apostilled birth certificate with bank statements for an Irish visa application lodged abroad, and the signed copies had to be couriered outside Ireland. We ask for passport spellings first, because Cyrillic names can be romanised several ways.

Which Russian Documents Need a Certified English Translation?

ISD's guidance on certified translations sets out what the translator must add: a statement that the translation is true to the original they have seen, a signature and date, and their printed name, occupation, address and telephone number. The original Russian document normally travels with the translation, so keep it safe and send us a clear copy of every page.

This page covers documents written in Russian, wherever they were issued. That includes Russian Federation certificates and also the many records issued in Russian in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and other former Soviet states, including older USSR certificates printed in Russian alongside a republic's own language.

Documents written in Ukrainian are a separate language pair, handled on our Ukrainian page. If a certificate mixes both languages, send it anyway: we check which text carries the legal content and quote the job once.

Common situations

When Do People in Ireland Need Russian Documents Translated?

Each situation below came up in real requests. The document set changes from case to case, and so does the detail that needs the most care.

🏛️

An Immigration File With ISD

A Russian birth certificate is one of the documents we translate most for ISD applications. We render the record number, registry office and both parents' details in full, so the reviewing officer can match every line of the English copy to the Russian original.

✈️

A Visa Application From Abroad

Applicants living outside Ireland sometimes apply through an Irish embassy or visa office. We have translated apostilled birth certificates with bank statements for exactly this, then sent the signed copies by express courier to the applicant's country of residence.

⏱️

A Deadline That Has Moved Up

Urgent requests are common with Russian certificates, usually because a file is due within days. A one- or two-page birth certificate can often be turned round the same day if the scan is clear and the name spellings are confirmed early.

🔤

A Name Spelled Differently in Two Places

Russian passports issued since 2013 follow the ICAO transliteration scheme, while older ones used other systems. If your passport says Yulia and an old document says Ioulia, we follow the spelling you tell us and keep it identical on every page.

🌍

A Certificate From Another Former Soviet State

Kazakh, Belarusian and Latvian civil records are often written wholly or partly in Russian. We translate the Russian text and flag any section in another language, so nothing on the page is left without an English version.

🎓

Study or Work in Ireland

Universities, QQI and employers may ask for an English version of a Russian diploma and its supplement. We keep subject names, credit hours and grading scales exactly as listed, without converting them to an Irish equivalent.

What We Have Learned Translating Russian Records for Irish Use

A handful of issues account for nearly every query or delay on Russian documents. None of them are about the language itself; they are about names, stamps and the pages people forget to scan.

Transliteration causes the most rework. One Cyrillic surname can appear in Latin letters in three or four ways depending on the year a passport was issued. We match the spelling in the passport you are submitting rather than applying a standard table.

The apostille is part of the job. Clients sometimes send only the front of an apostilled certificate. The apostille is a separate certificate attached to the document, and an Irish reviewer will expect its text in English too, so we include it in the quote.

Soviet-era certificates need careful reading. Older birth certificates are often handwritten in places, with faded entries and place names that have since changed. We translate the place as written at the time and add a translator's note where a modern name helps.

Mixed bundles go faster when sent together. A birth certificate plus three bank statements is common for visa files. Sending everything at once lets one translator keep names, dates and account details consistent across the set.

Before you order: a quick check

These five points save most rework

1
Send the passport page

We copy the Latin spelling of every name from it.

2
Scan both sides

Reverse sides and apostille pages often carry stamps.

3
Name the authority

ISD, an embassy or a university each have their own checklist.

4
Say if copies go abroad

We quote courier delivery outside Ireland up front.

5
Flag Ukrainian text

Ukrainian-language pages follow our Ukrainian service.

Other Translations Russian Speakers Often Need

Certificates written in Ukrainian rather than Russian are covered by our certified Ukrainian translation service, so check which language your document uses before ordering. If you need a birth record from any country turned into English, see our page on translating a foreign birth certificate. Visa applicants sending bank statements and civil records together may find our Irish visa document translation guide useful.

Russian police certificates are explained on our police clearance translation page. When an Irish document has to be used in Russia or elsewhere abroad, we can arrange DFA apostille and legalisation alongside the notary step.

Good questions, answered

Russian to English Translation — Your Questions, Answered

Do you translate Russian documents issued outside Russia? +
Yes. Many civil records from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and other former Soviet states are written in Russian, as are older USSR certificates. If the document is in Russian, this service covers it, wherever it was issued.
My certificate is in Ukrainian, not Russian. Is this the right page? +
No. Ukrainian-language documents are a different language pair and are handled through our Ukrainian to English service. If one certificate has both languages on it, send it to us and we will quote it as a single job.
How do you spell names from Cyrillic? +
We use the spelling on the passport you will submit. Russian passports issued since 2013 follow the ICAO scheme, while older passports used other systems, so the same name can look different. Tell us which document to follow and we keep it consistent.
Does the apostille need translating as well? +
If the apostille is attached to your Russian document and is written in Russian, we translate it as part of the same document. It confirms the signature and seal on the certificate, so the receiving body will usually want to read it.
Can I get an apostille added in Ireland to a Russian certificate? +
No. An apostille is issued by the country that issued the document, so a Russian certificate gets its apostille from the Russian authorities. In Ireland, the DFA only apostilles Irish public documents, such as a notarised translation made here.
Do you need my original document? +
No. A clear scan or phone photo of every page is enough for us to work from. Keep the original safe, as the authority you apply to may ask to see it alongside the translation.
Can you send the signed translation outside Ireland? +
Yes. You receive a signed PDF by email straight away, and we can courier paper copies to another country if your application is being lodged abroad. Courier costs are shown in the quote before you pay.
How fast can you translate a Russian birth certificate? +
Standard delivery is 24 to 48 hours. A short, clearly scanned birth certificate can often be done the same day, from €50, once the name spellings are confirmed.
Will an Irish authority accept my Russian translation? +
The decision always belongs to the authority reviewing your file, and requirements can change, so check its current checklist. We prepare the translation to the standard ISD describes and, if a detail is queried, we revise and reissue it free of charge.
